We are looking for someone with skills in low carbon building design and retrofit to join the retrofit team at URBED.
Deadline: 10am on Monday 18th January 2021
Salary: £25,290 – £32,020, 35 hour work-week, dependent on skills and experience.
Contract: 0.6-1.0 Full Time Equivalent. Part-time and flexible working will be considered.
Location: Central Manchester, largely covering projects in the North West and Yorkshire.
Status: Permanent, following 6 month probationary period. PAYE.
How to apply: Email email@example.com with a CV, maximum two-page covering letter, and portfolio.
Academic qualifications: Degree in Architectural Technology, Architecture, Building Surveying or a related discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered.
Experience: Minimum of one year in a relevant setting.
You will be involved in a variety of projects – from community and commercial buildings, to large-scale multi-home retrofit projects in the public sector, and one-off domestic retrofit projects through our People Powered Retrofit service collaboration with Carbon Co-op. You will be expected to work across all stages of project development, from assessment and scoping to technical design, construction, handover, and evaluation. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of responsible low carbon retrofit techniques. You should be able to consider all aspects of building physics and materials selection to produce successful technical designs that perform well. Most of our architectural and retrofit projects are based in the North of England. Though this role is office-based, you will be expected to travel to project sites from time to time to carry out surveys and inspect construction work.
URBED (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd (www.urbed.coop) is an award-winning design and research consultancy based in Manchester. In the last decade we have developed a national reputation for our innovative work in whole house retrofit. This has included design work on building projects, as well as developing policy, systems, and tools to support retrofit. Our office is in central Manchester, but at the moment we are predominantly working from home, using a number of tools to aid collaboration as we work remotely. We are a fully mutual employee-owned cooperative and company limited by guarantee. Our employee members each have a £1 share and we make business decisions collectively. We operate a system of self-management with internal working groups covering Personnel, Finance, Marketing, IT, and Office Management duties. Following a successful probationary period, you would become a member of the cooperative and would be offered the opportunity to become a director.
We offer 28 days holiday per year plus Bank Holidays (full time equivalent – this will be pro rata if the position is part-time). We also offer ‘Climate Perks’ days, and a cycle to work scheme to encourage sustainable personal travel. We operate a ‘time off in lieu’ system and encourage a healthy working hours culture. We take looking after our employees seriously and have best practice Parental and Dependents Leave, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Flexible Working, and Equal Opportunities policies. Please ask if you would like to see any of our policies.
